SCOTTSBORO, Ala. -- Scottsboro Police arrested a Lawrenceburg man wanted in connection with the rape of a 16-month-old child.
A Scottsboro police officer arrested Simon Dean Porter, 33, Sunday while he walking on Highway 79 near Scottsboro. Porter had an arrest warrant from the Lawrenceburg Police Department for aggravated rape of a child. Police said the incident happened November 10. The child is being treated at Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital in Nashville.
Lieutenant Zackie Gant said a person saw Porter, and alerted authorities.
Sydney Ivey notices people walking on the side of the road. So when she saw a man clad in a Michigan sweatshirt walking down Highway 79 while she was on her way to Scottsboro, she took note. Then she got a better look.
She said she thought she recognized the man as Simon Porter, who was on Tennessee's Top 10 Most Wanted List. Ivey didn't have good service where she was, so she called her mom and asked her to call police. "The officer got out with the subject, asked him his name, and he told him Simon. Then he told his last name, Porter," Gant said, "Our officer immediately detained him because he knew Mr. Porter had warrants for his arrest."
The officer asked Porter what he was doing. Gant said Porter told the officer he was coming from Rogersville and going to Huntsville. "It's kind of a rural area, where he was coming from," Gant said, "He was at the foot of Skyline Mountain. There are not many homes around. He didn't have any bags or anything. He was just walking."
The officer put Porter under arrest and brought him to the city's jail. Lawrenceburg Police arrived in Scottsboro Sunday afternoon to pick Porter up and drive him back to Tennessee. His initial court appearance will be December 6. A judge set his bond at one million dollars.
UPDATE: Simon Porter is now in custody. He was located and arrested by authorities in Scottsboro, Alabama.
