Talk has surfaced again about requiring all students of Huntsville City Schools wear uniforms. The principal at Providence recently announced uniforms will be mandatory at that school.

Principals at each school in Huntsville decide if their students will wear uniforms. They make their decisions based on results of a survey done last year. School leaders did the surveys to come up with one answer district-wide.

School Board President Laurie McCaulley says principals are now using information specific to their school.

"The administrator will go back and review the information, do a phone survey again and hold a couple of PTA public meetings addressing the issue," said McCaulley.

Students of some schools on all levels in the school system now wear uniforms. Other schools are considering uniforms.

McCaulley says students at 25 percent of the district's schools could wear them next fall.

WHNT NEWS 19 asked the McCaulley what happened to the survey showing 68 percent of parents district-wide wanting their child to wear a uniform.

"The issue was tabled because at the time we could not have a majority of the board that could adhere to the responses," added McCaulley.

The board, under the leadership of former Superintendent Dr. Ann Roy Moore, wanted to wait for a transition to new leadership. McCaulley wants the school district to require uniforms for all students.

"My preference is to do whatever it takes to make Huntsville City Schools the premiere school system in the state," added McCaulley.

McCaulley says the school system should listen to the parents' response.

"If you are going to commission a survey and you do not like the results, that is one thing, but you should honor the results," added McCaulley.

Board members can talk about uniform at any meeting. The superintendent would have to recommend a vote on the issue before board members can re-introduce it for a vote.
