Last year, more than 6 million car seats were recalled for a safety defect, yet fewer than half were fixed.

This is Child Passenger Safety Week. The emphasis for CPS week this year is the importance of registering your car seat and what to know/do about recalls. With support from General Motors, a study was conducted by Safe Kids Worldwide to understand how families manage car seat registrations and recalls.

Among the findings from the study that are most telling are that 80% of parents felt it was important to register their car seat, 68% knew why they were sending in the card, however only 42% reporting having actually done so.

What’s the point in registering? Registering your child’s car seat is the best way for you to learn about a recall in the most timely and dependable manner; directly from the manufacturer. If there has been a recall on your child’s seat, and if you’ve already registered, you will automatically receive the parts needed to fix the problem. But, if you haven’t registered, then you will have to request the parts.
