REDSTONE ARSENAL, Ala. - If you ask 32-year Army veteran Darren Cook the state of his service today, you get a definite answer. "I would say we're in much better shape than we were over 32 years ago," Cook says.

He should know.  Darren Cook is the Army Materiel Command's first-ever Command Chief Warrant Officer.  He's been a specialist in logistics since he joined the Army in 1984. His three decades of experience help him, and help AMC do its job.

"We have soldiers in over 140 countries around the world, and we're doing it efficiently, and effectively, and quietly with success," says Chief Warrant Officer Cook.  As the Command Chief Warrant Officer puts it,  AMC makes sure soldiers have what they need, when they need it, and where they need it.

A prime example of Army Materiel Success in the mission is the European Activity Set. A team at Redstone Arsenal's AMC Headquarters makes sure equipment is in place and waiting on soldiers when they deploy to Europe.  It saves time and money.  The soldiers who use the equipment are the ones who make sure it stays in good running order. "It's critically important as we go through this budget constraint. But it's also part of who we are as an Army," says Chief Warrant Officer Cook.

A three-day school for Army Aviators at Redstone made sure the soldiers understood their responsibility for keeping their equipment maintained. The  soldiers seemed to relish that idea, and Chief Warrant Officer Cook isn't surprised.  He says soldiers these days  are better than when he joined.

"Soldiers, in my opinion, they're a lot smarter, they're more innovative, they embrace technology that is available. I think that makes them more lethal. I think that makes them a much better fighter in terms of accomplishing their mission," says Cook.

The Army Materiel Command makes sure the soldiers are equipped in every way for their mission.  Command Chief Warrant Officer Darren Cook is a major part of that effort. It's why you'll find his photo on the wall with those of all the commanders and top civilians who keep AMC operating every day.
