HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) - A chanting crowd at the Jackson Center awaited GOP presidential hopeful Ted Cruz's arrival this weekend. Alabama will play a part of the SEC Primary on March 1, and as the candidate tours, he made Huntsville his second Alabama stop on Sunday.
The Republican Women of Huntsville held a free ice cream town hall to put Cruz in front of local residents.
"They're kind of hungry to actually see the people they see on TV every day," said Len Vaught, President of the Republican Women of Huntsville. "It's a good idea for people to get out and see and hear as many of them as possible to be an informed voter."
Hundreds greeted the Texas senator, introduced by Congressman Mo Brooks.
"I'm thrilled to be here in Huntsville, I'm thrilled to see this incredible turnout," said GOP hopeful Cruz. "We're seeing standing-room-only crowds everywhere we go. The reason is simple: people are fed up with politicians who say one thing and do another."
Over the past few days, Cruz has been traveling throughout the southern region, making multiple stops in Alabama, a state of voters who may not usually get the chance to see a presidential candidate, as part of his Cruz Country Tour.
"It's all about building our grassroots organization, our leadership team," said the Texas senator. "I've got to tell you, the energy and enthusiasm we're seeing here in Alabama, and yesterday in Georgia and the day before in South Carolina was electric."
Cruz says he's seen a boost in support since the GOP debate.
"That surge is, I think the result of men and women across this country who are looking for a strong proven consistent conservative," he said.
In his speech, the candidate said he's seen excitement across the south in what he calls a time of crisis in our country.
"I am encouraged that the American people are rising up saying 'Let's get back to the principles that made America great.'"
The candidate's 'Cruz Country' Tour makes four stops in Tennessee on Monday. From there, his bus tour will travel through Thursday, ending in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
