MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Governor Robert Bentley’s office sent a press release on behalf of Rebekah Mason Wednesday afternoon stating that she had resigned her post with the governor.

Mason said, “I have resigned as Senior Political Advisor to Governor Bentley and will no longer be paid from his campaign fund. I have also ended my work with the Alabama Council For Excellent Government. My only plans are to focus my full attention on my precious children and my husband who I love dearly. They are the most important people in my life. Thank you for your prayers for our family.”

Earlier Wednesday, Bentley was firm that he plans to remain on the job.  “I have no intentions of resigning,” he said. “My intentions are to try to make this state better, to work through the difficulties we’re going through.

“Have I made mistakes? Yes. I’m sorry. We have addressed them. I’ve apologized.  These are old issues, but it’s just now that people are hearing about them,” he said.

The Alabama Ethics Commission is investigating a complaint filed against the governor and Mason. Gov. Bentley has acknowledged inappropriate behavior involving Mason, but insists the two did not have a physical relationship. An attorney with the ethics commission said special agents will be assigned to the case. State Auditor Jim Zeigler requested the investigation.

Representative Ed Henry (R-Hartselle) told WHNT News 19 he will start the process of impeachment against the governor next week.
