BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — Police in Alabama say two teenage boys have been wounded by a 12-year-old girl who was playing with a gun.

Birmingham police told news outlets they found a 13-year-old and 14-year old boy with gunshot wounds near a playground Tuesday. One is hospitalized in serious condition and the other suffered non-life threatening injuries.

The girl was about two blocks away when she was taken into custody. Police Spokesman Sgt. Johnny Williams said the preliminary information indicates the girl was playing with the gun when it discharged.

Birmingham Police Chief Patrick Smith called the shooting an unfortunate situation and said it’s too soon to tell whether any adults will be charged.
