HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) - Callers tell WHNT News 19 News there are long lines to claim the new laptops for Huntsville City School students.

The laptops were approved for student's use beginning this fall. Callers tell us that several hundred parents are standing in long lines to claim the new equipment. They tell us the situation, with so many people standing out in the heat and direct sunlight, could be dangerous for some.

Huntsville City Schools distributed water, and many people fanned themselves in line.  However, most waited patiently and without complaint.

UPDATE: School officials tell us that today's pick-up opportunity is referred to as an "early bird" date, and tell us the lines are moving. They report the process is proceeding as planned and that a lot of people are taking advantage of this early opportunity to claim their child's computer.  They urge families to follow the pickup schedule outlined by Huntsville City Schools.

Parents can pick up laptops this week or next week.  They can also wait for school to start.
