HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) – Open enrollment through the Affordable Care Act’s health care exchange begins this Saturday, Nov. 15 and runs through Feb. 15.
It is a shorter enrollment period than in the exchange’s inaugural year.
This year north Alabama will again have health care navigators like Cathy Rice to help you understand the enrollment process, whether you’re renewing, changing plans, or signing up for the first time.
“For several months we’ve been going out into the community into small groups, large groups, health fairs, libraries, educating people who still have questions about the Affordable Care Act, what it is, who qualifies for the insurance, how you go about getting it,” said Rice.
This year a particular focus will be on women and children living in rural counties, but they’re here to help anyone.
“I have been targeting 12 counties in north Alabama to help get them the information. I go to them. I have my own computer, hot spot, and we will get the information and sit down together and do that,” Rice said.
If you purchased health insurance through the exchange last year and are happy with the plan you have, you don’t have to re-enroll. Most will auto-renew. But if you’ve had changes in income or your household – like a new job or getting married – you’ll need to report it through your Healthcare.gov account.
This Saturday, Enroll Alabama and the health care Navigators will be at the Drake Community College Health Fair to kick off open enrollment from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
If you would like to set up an appointment with a navigator, you can call Cathy Rice at 256-783-6492 or T.C. Caldwell at 256-432-7494. Both are located at 600 St. Clair, Bldg. 9, Ste. 23, Huntsville, Al, by appointment only.
