ATHENS, Ala. (WHNT) - One person is dead after a car crashed into an Athens home Tuesday evening.

It happened along Highway 127 shortly after 5:30 p.m.

State troopers say 38-year-old Joe Campbell of Elkmont lost control of his four-door sedan while driving north along Elkmont Road.

He crashed into a tree, a utility pole and a home about four miles north of Athens.

Campbell died at the scene.  No one else was hurt.

State troopers are investigating the cause of the accident.

Homeowner Norma Coffman was home at the time of the crash.

"I was watching TV and the TV went off and then I heard, kind of, just like a light boom and I thought maybe it blew up or something," said Coffman, "and I got up and looked out and there was a lot of smoke, just everywhere."

The accident knocked out Coffman's power, but utility crews worked to restore it within a few hours.

Alabama State Troopers, Limestone County Sheriff's Deputies, Athens-Limestone EMA and the Owens Fire Department all responded to the scene.

Crews blocked off the highway for more than two hours following the wreck.
