GUNTERSVILLE, Ala. — This week, the Guntersville City Council voted to approve an agreement that will designate Guntersville as a “Gig City.”
“We approved an agreement with Southern Light out of Mobile to provide internet service to city hall,” Mayor Leigh Dollar says.
The city approved a franchise agreement about a year ago with the company, laying the groundwork for this latest move. “We had been talking about internet service, and they will run the infrastructure to provide it to city hall,” Dollar explains.
The city hall will be the first building that will have gigabit internet capabilities. “We will be the first. It will actually be the infrastructure for a gig city. So we will be a gig city,” Dollar says.
As demand increases, the capabilities could expand. “Typically I think they do governments, large businesses,” Dollar explains, “They don’t do residential at this point in time.”
City officials say this move is a platform for Guntersville to step into and expand gig capabilities.
Construction on the infrastructure is anticipated to begin soon. There isn’t a timeframe just yet.
