MARSHALL COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) -- Dozens of warming centers in Marshall County are open as of Monday, and most will run through the week.

When the weather turns cold enough, Marshall County EMA coordinates the opening of the centers across the county.

"It's a combination of publicly owned, government-owned or faith-based organizations. We have close to 30," Marshall County EMA Operations Coordinator George Harwell says.

Harwell says there are dozens of centers scattered throughout the county.

"We're fortunate enough to have at least two or three in every major city or town, plus some rural parts of the county," Harwell says.

The various locations have posted days and times they will be available for the public.

EMA officials say the times are typically during the hours the particular entities are open. Anyone is welcome to come if the need is there. "We do point out that it is a warming center only," Harwell says, "People have to provide their own transportation to get there. There's not any food or drink provided."

Officials say you are welcome to bring your own food and drink, if it is allowed by the hosting entity. Coordinators say if you have questions about bringing your pet, to call that particular organization to see if it is allowed.

The shelters do not provide overnight stays. For more information on an organization that can provide that accommodation at specific times during the winter months, click here.
