FORT PAYNE, Ala. - During the month of October, Toys for Tots in Dekalb County is collecting applications for Christmas toys for those who may need the assistance.  In the past, parents were able to apply through the school system, but this year applications will only be at Dekalb County's DHR.

"We've decided to streamline it to make it simpler for everybody involved and equal opportunity to for every family," says LaRue Hardinger, the Toys for Tots coordinator.

This is the fourth year that the Marine Corps Reserve has raised money and gifts for the children in Dekalb County.  Organizers say it was very important to bring Toys for Tots to this community.

"Well this county in particular, we have a 24% poverty rate and there's just a lot of children in need. A lot of families who are just making ends meet," says Hardinger.

With the help and support of the community, they were able to provide over 800 children with toys last year, and they are hoping to give to more than that this year, so they want your help.

"Buy what you would buy for your children and your grandchildren that way we get a very big array of different types of toys."

Organizers of Toys for Tots are grateful for such a giving and supportive community, and say this fundraiser wouldn't be as great without the help.

"Any and all gifts are appreciated, don't get me wrong. Everything that is given we truly appreciate."
