A Scottsboro man is accused of raping a 15-year-old girl.

Police say they found out during a drug investigation involving the arrest of 28-year-old Leonard Michael Batey.

Batey is charged with four counts of rape and two counts of sodomy.

Scottsboro police received a complaint about drug activity with juveniles present.

Officers arrested Batey in late March for possession of drug paraphernalia, and further investigation found sexual activity with juveniles.

Detective Scott Matthews said the call from a concerned citizen was key to this case.

“Generally kids don’t…come to us and report that,” Matthews said.

“Knowledgeable citizens who are keeping an eye on things and notice that things aren’t right and give us phone calls?  That helps us so much with our job.”

Batey posted a $90,000 bond Wednesday afternoon.

He had previously posted bond on the drug charge, but Matthews said that bond was not revoked since the new charges are from events that are said to have happened before the first arrest.
