FORT PAYNE, Ala. (WHNT) -- After state- issued emergency order to close a DeKalb County assisted living facility residents staying there were forced to find a new place to stay by three o'clock Thursday afternoon.

The order was issued Wednesday, saying the facility placed residents at serious risk for imminent harm and are in direct violation of the State Board of Health’s Rules for Specialty Care Assisted Living Facilities.

It gave residents until three o'clock Thursday to be out.

The facility was capable of taking care of residents with dementia and Alzheimer's, as well as day-to-day living.

It was the only other assisted living facility that was not a nursing home in Fort Payne.

Janet Owen is an administrator at WillsCreek Village, the second non-nursing home assisted living facility in the city.

She says residents leaving The White House won't be able to come to her facility. "We're full and we actually have a waiting list," Owen says.

Owen says she was pleased when The White House first opened and was capable of taking residents who need specialty care. "Because I thought, 'Well, I'll have a place that I can send people, without them having to go into a nursing home or something,' because the only other place besides a nursing home is in Geraldine," Owen says, "I don't know if they have any rooms, but they are licensed to take those people."

Her facility doesn't have the capabilities of taking care of patients with dementia and Alzheimer's

Documents issued by the state show there were four residents living at The White House as of Tuesday, but it's not clear if those residents needed specialty care for dementia or Alzheimer's.

The state told WHNT News 19 it will help residents find a new place to stay.
