MENTONE, Ala. (WHNT) — A small, generations-old church is in need of many repairs and its members are asking the community for help to preserve it.

A walkway made of stone leads up to an entrance to St. Joseph’s on-the-Mountain Episcopal Church in Mentone. Inside, is a piece of history.

“It’s the oldest building still being used in Mentone,” parishioner Ann Chesnut says. She’s talking about a log cabin, built in the 1800s. That cabin at first was a residence in Mentone, now it is at the heart of St. Joseph’s. Additions constructed by volunteer help were added in the 1970s.

However, this gem is in desperate need of repair. Chesnut says they’ve put off repairs for a while, but now there are some things that can’t hold off any longer. The foundation is in need of work, and there are electrical and plumbing issues that need attention.

“We just need to get busy and renew this building for the next generation to come,” parishioner Ron Merrell says.

Merrell says they’re turning to the community to do that. “We need help. We’re not a very big church, and to do this as it must be done we need the help from the community,” Merrell says.

The church is involved in various community outreach programs and serves people throughout the area. Visitors from all over the state and even from overseas have come to the church.

Parishioners say they want to keep serving all while preserving the church, but say they can’t do it on their own.

But, they’re hoping with some help, they can do it, so generations to come can enjoy this piece of history too.

If you’re interested in assisting the church members in the restoration project, you’re asked to contact them at 256-634-4476. The church offers tours on request and it is open 24 hours a day for visitors to enjoy. It is located on the corner of Highway 117 and Scenic Highway in Mentone.
