GUNTERSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) -- Guntersville Fire and Rescue is helping the community in a different way this weekend with its 'Fill the Boot' campaign.

"For 60 years firefighters across the nation have helped out with MDA and raising money, so Guntersville Fire is going to continue that tradition this year with our boot drives," says Fire Marshal Buddy Pettry.

Friday, Saturday and Sunday the firefighters will be out doing just that with their Fill the Boot drive. "The boot drive is when people come by and we'll set up at our local stores" Pettry explains, "This year we're setting up at Food Land, at Walmart, and at Piggly Wiggly, and we're setting up the boots and they can just come by and drop a dollar in, and we like change but we also like the money that folds."

This is something the department has been doing for years. "In 2008 we won the firefighter Golden Axe award for raising the most money for our size station, so we raised over $10,000 that year for MDA," Pettry says.

The campaign is something the whole department gets behind, helping to save and improve the lives of people fighting muscle disease in the local area. "All of the fire department is participating," Pettry says, "All of this shift guys will be out in force at our local stores."

The members of the department spend their time helping the community and this is just one more way to do that.
