FORT PAYNE, Ala. (WHNT) - They are known as the Fort Payne Seven.   They are students that make up an engineering team at Fort Payne High School and they are now state champions.

The team found out Monday afternoon they had won the state competition.   They learned the news in a video message from Alabama's Lt. Governor Kay Ivey.

The competition is called the Real World Design Challenge.   The Fort Payne students competed against students from across the state to design a aerial drone that could be used in search and rescue operations.

The team will now go on to compete in the national competition in Washington, D.C.   That will be in April.
