GUNTERSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — The city of Guntersville is taking steps to open doors for its City Harbor as hopes of a potential development are at the front of the vision.
Late last year, the Guntersville City Council voted to rezone two pieces of property at City Harbor that the city owns. As a result, the land is zoned general business that allows on premise alcohol. Part of the land was already zoned the same way.
The council hopes the move will make the property more marketable to a developer and now the city is taking another step in that direction. “We are in the process of getting a feasibility study done,” explains Guntersville Mayor Leigh Dollar, “We are trying to do everything we can to make that property more marketable to the right investor.”
The study is essentially details on what a developer needs to know for consideration on a project.
As for what type of project, the city has a wide range of visions. “We would listen to anything that someone comes with,” Dollar says, “Obviously we would love to sell it, but just depending on the project and what the plans where would depend on what we do as a city.”
There is a need for more hotels to add to entities already in the area. Dollar says they don’t want to take away business from the existing hotels, but there could be an opportunity for a hotel in the City Harbor area for visitors who travel to Guntersville on larger boats. Visitors traveling on smaller boats have opportunities in other areas of the city on the water.
The city expects the study to be done in the next several weeks and the council approved up to $30,000 for the study. City officials expect it to be much less than that.
City leaders say they’d like a development that matches the historic character of downtown and increases tourism.
