DEKALB COUNTY,  Ala. – Residents on Government Drive in Geraldine woke up to flames at a home in their neighborhood early Friday morning. A neighbor across the street immediately alerted police and responders rushed to the house around 4 a.m. “Once they got on scene and started fighting the fire, they realized the possibility of someone in the residence,” said Chief Deputy Michael Edmondson.

Responders found one person in the living room and another person in a bedroom. Unfortunately, the two were unable to survive the fire. “The Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating that part of it. It’s an ongoing process, and it’ll take time,” explained Edmondson.

Officials said they found several electrical heaters inside of the home but were not able to confirm that they were the cause of the fire. The fire marshal will have to determine that.

Authorities sent the two victims off for autopsies to determine what exactly caused their deaths. “It’s just a sad situation,” said Edmondson. “It’s right here in a small town. We just need to remember the families and pray for them in their loss.” The names of the two victims involved in the fire have not yet been released.
