BRIDGEPORT, Ala. (WHNT) — The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office says a 17-year-old is charged with attempted murder.

Sheriff Chuck Phillips says Saturday night the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office responded to a shooting call at home on Spiller Avenue in Bridgeport. “When we arrived, we found out that a 19-year-old man had been shot in the leg. He was taken to Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga for treatment,” Sheriff Phillips says.

Investigators say the supposed shooter had left the home. “During the time in which he was leaving I think he ran over a car and hit a telephone pole. He went to Stevenson. He was actually picked up in Stevenson and taken to the Stevenson Police Department where we interviewed him,” Sheriff Phillips says.

Sheriff Phillips says Lataz Austin Smith was shot in the leg with a small-caliber hand gun by Trey Montez Hutchins.

Hutchins is charged as an adult with Attempted Murder.

Investigators believe the shooting may have stemmed from a situation over a woman.
