ARAB, Ala. (WHNT) - Nearly two weeks after a meeting regarding the current state of the Brookwood Cemetery in Arab, the situation has become even more complicated.

Grounds maintenance is not currently happening at Brookwood Cemetery. The manager told WHNT the owner told him to stop upkeep following an altercation while mowing last week. Arab resident Melissa Narrell says she's upset to hear this news after watching conditions of the cemetery continue to worsen.

"Put it back... like it used to be. Instead of a hayfield, I mean that's basically what I call it, because you could bale hay off it, I mean its tall enough, it gets tall enough, it just looks pitiful," Narrell said.

The owners live out of state and the cemetery has a history of financial troubles, which are still issues today. The cemetery is also outside of city limits, only furthering complications.

"It's really a nice cemetery. And I'd like to see it upgraded and brought back to the condition it was in prior to where it's at now, but as far as the city taking over that liability, we don't have the funds to do that, and you know, I sympathize with them," says Arab Mayor Bob Joslin.

The future of Brookwood is still unknown. However, many people are working hard to find a solution, including residents who are willing to try for a citizen run organization.

"Turn it over to the community, I'm sure there's plenty of us that would sit on a board, and be active members, I mean I would do it for my husband," adds Narrell.

WHNT News 19 tried multiple times to get in touch with the owner. Our calls were not returned. We'll continue to search for answers about the future of the Brookwood Cemetery.
