ALBERTVILLE, Ala. -- Big Brothers Big Sisters of North Alabama is looking for volunteers and kids to join the organization's new location in Marshall County.
"Big Brothers Big Sisters of North Alabama is a non-profit mentoring organization," Program Director Carol Sporleder says, "We have been here in North Alabama serving the community for about 34 years now."
Now the organization is expanding to Marshall County, locating in Albertville. "What we do is match children in the community that are facing some type of adversity with an adult role model who would be their big brother or big sister," Sporleder says.
That's where Marshall County can help. "Our biggest concern right now is finding people in the community to commit to being a volunteer, commit to mentoring a child, and just getting the program off of the ground," Sporleder explains.
Volunteers are screened and will work with a child for at least one year. They must be at least 19 years old. "We've already established a waiting list here so there are children in the community right now that need a mentor that have already sought out our services so now it's up to everybody in the community to come together and mentor these children," Sporleder says.
The program works with children ages five to 13, and the services for children are free. "Being a volunteer with Big Brothers Big Sisters is probably going to be the most fun you'll ever have," Sporleder said, "I've been a big sister for almost two years now and it will change your life."
