ARAB, Ala. (WHNT)–  Monday night the Arab City Council approved a sales tax increase.  The sales tax will go from the current 8 cents on every dollar to 9 cents.

The money will be used to make repairs and improvements on city streets.

“When you hear someone say sale tax is going up, everybody has the knee-jerk reaction of, ‘Oh my God, taxes are going up,'” said Dawn Sparks.

Sparks owns Dot’s Gifts and Consignment which is located in downtown Arab.  She says despite the reaction to some, she believes the increase will not impact her business.

“It’s only one more cent,” Sparks said.  “In the scheme of things, it’s not going to devastate anybody’s pocket book and it’s going to allow the city to do some things that need doing.”

The increase will take effect on September 1st.
