HUNTSVILLE, Ala.(WHNT)-The city of Huntsville’s biggest high school by enrollment could soon be on the move.

Earlier this year, the Huntsville City School System announced plans for an overhaul of Grissom High School, but new details are emerging which show that the district is seriously considering moving the school to another part of South Huntsville.

On Monday night, school officials prsented an overview of Grissom’s future to members of the Chaffee Neighborhood Civic Association.  The group met at Community Fellowship Church on Logan Drive.

The Chaffee neighborhood is not far from what could be Grissom’s future home at Weatherly Road and the edge of Redstone Arsenal, one of four target sites that Huntsville City Schools have identified for a new building.

District spokesman Jeffrey Wilson said Weatherly and Grissom’s current location on Bailey Cove Road are the leading contenders.

“No final decision has been made,” said Wilson, who maintained that the school district is still in the exploratory process. “Even if we went ahead and built a new Grissom on the same site, you’re really limited in the things that you can do, on land that’s about half the size of what we would want.”

The Weatherly site is almost double the size of Grissom’s current location, but would have to be bought by the school system. However, officials say building at Weatherly would save taxpayers roughly $4 million, while also taking two years less to build compared to overhauling the current campus. Some Chaffee residents said a relocation of Grissom could bring other benefits to their area.

“We’re excited to hear more about it and see which direction they go,” said Civic Association member Ginny Langbehn. “If it [Grissom] moves over to the Chaffee area, that’s going to bring economic development and growth to South Parkway that we’re really excited about.”
