HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) - City leaders are unveiling new improvements to the dog spot on Cleveland Avenue that will have dog owners howling with happiness.

Mayor Tommy Battle and animal advocates plan to make the announcement at one o'clock at the dog park.

A spokeswoman for the city said pet owners have been asking for covered pavilions to get out of the sun, but the city could not build them since the park is on ALDOT right of way.

Mayor Battle persevered and came up with a compromise: sunshades. They are considered non-permanent but they will do the trick.

The city also added nice picnic tables under the shades.

Mayor Battle has invited Dr. Karen Sheppard, Director of Huntsville Animal Services, to bring some of the dogs at the shelter over to the park to play.

Mayor Battle will be giving them pet toys.
