HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT)-- The Westin Huntsville and the above empty floors will get new life during major upgrades over the rest of the year.
At a party Thursday, Westin Huntsville General Manager Mark Nelson said the Westin Huntsville will soon see renovations. The vacant upper floors, including condominiums, will soon become an entirely new hotel. It will be called The Element Huntsville by Westin.
The Element will be located on floors seven to 11 of the building. It's described as a "modern upscale" feel for an extended-stay model. Nelson said there's nothing like it in Huntsville right now.
"I think contractors will love it," he said. "In fact, I think some of them will contact us and say, 'What does it take for us to rent them seven days a week?'"
Erin Koshut, Director of Cummings Research Park, said the Element will be a good addition to the park.
"That presents a real opportunity for the companies in the park who are bringing in, whether it's staff who are looking at Huntsville and considering locating to Huntsville, additional customers, or VIP's."
This is the first Westin-Element combination under one roof, according to Nelson. A press release issued by the hotel explains that the Element is designed to be “green from the ground up,” seamlessly blending sustainable smart design, inspiring public spaces, chic, spacious suites and modern amenities for a compelling, no-compromise experience.
Nelson said construction was already happening on the Element, which will include 150 new rooms. 68 of those will be suites, but they will all have kitchens.
But the Westin on the lower floors will be almost completely changed, said Nelson.
"Just about everything that you walk in the door and see will be different by the time you get to the middle of February," explained Nelson. "We'll be renovating everything. Every guest room will be redone from top to bottom. The lobby, redone. The restaurant and bar, completely redone. This ballroom," he said, gesturing to the room in which the interview took place, "completely redone."
Overall, Nelson said the owners are putting millions of dollars into the changes. The Element's target completion date is January 1, and the Westin Huntsville's changes should be finished in March.
