MADISON, Ala. – Authorities have charged two teens who, police believe, are responsible for killing a man. The incident happened behind a Publix grocery store on County Line Road in Madison.
“We have taken what we believe two very dangerous predators off the street,” Chief David Jernigan with Madison Police said. He’s speaking of Aaron Jones, 17, and Jakobe Carter, 18, who were staying at Three Springs, and were reported as runaways Monday Morning.
The teen suspects were located in the woods on Browns Ferry Road, not far from the medium-risk secure juvenile facility.
The crime happened just after 11 p.m. Monday. Officers said construction crews working on a renovation project at the Publix called Madison Police. When officers arrived and found the victim’s body, they said it seemed “unusual.”
“There was a construction trailer would be typical for a crew to be working inside and outside. From what we understand, he was the lone individual outside, it appears to be a target of opportunity,” Chief Jernigan said.
Authorities said they found a man, now identified as Van Johnson, 61, of Riverdale, Georgia, behind the store. They say Johnson had severe head trauma, and was pronounced dead on the scene.
After going through surveillance video, police determined Jones, of Birmingham, and Carter, of Phenix City are responsible for the death. Madison Police, along with Huntsville, Limestone and Morgan County law enforcement agencies, searched for and helped locate the teenagers.
Now, Chief Jernigan said Limestone County District Attorney’s Office will continue investigating, and will take care of the charges. Madison Police will build their own case after receiving calls of multiple burglaries in the area.
Limestone County Sheriff’s Office has charged the teens with Capital Murder during a 1st degree Robbery, and 2nd degree Burglary.
No bond has been set at this time.
Leaders with the Madison Police Department have reached out to the administration at Three Springs to discuss ways to minimize security risks to the surrounding community.
