MADISON, Ala. – Madison City Schools approved a new “unassigned” elementary school zone classification for undeveloped residential areas in the Madison City Schools district. Superintendent Dee Fowler presented the new plan at Tuesday’s school board meeting.

The unassigned zoning will apply only to future residential growth areas, not existing homes.

“We make them unassigned and as people move into those subdivisions, then we will determine where we have room and then we would move the children into those schools,” said Fowler.

The action gives school officials the flexibility to assign up-and-coming subdivisions to elementary schools according to school space availability.

Currently, elementary schools district-wide have a 95 percent occupancy rate. Mill Creek Elementary School will have to utilize portable classrooms at the start of this school year. The new plan aims to prevent other elementary schools from using them.

“Hopefully, it will push back the need of portables on other campuses,” he said.

Fowler added that the Greenbrier Hills subdivision, near Seger Road in Limestone County, could be the first to follow this new plan. He plans to propose to the board that it be zoned for Heritage Elementary School, instead of Mill Creek, per the current zoning lines.

Currently, one home site out of a proposed 200 is just getting started in Greenbrier Hills.

No changes will be made, at this time, to middle school or high school zone lines, but Fowler said they will have to be reevaluated in the next few years to accommodate Madison’s growth.

“We’ve got to level out where we are within the city,” he said.

It will go into effect for the 2016-2017 school year.
