Department-issued pistol, rifle and bullet proof vest stolen from Madison police officer

LIMESTONE COUNTY –  The Athens Police Department is investigating the theft of a Madison police officer’s unmarked department issued pistol, rifle, and bullet proof vest.

Police say that the items were stolen when someone forcibly entered a department vehicle sometime between 9:00 p.m Sunday and 5:25 a.m. Monday.

The theft happened in the Athens Police Department’s jurisdiction and they are the investigating agency.

The Athens Police Department took several additional reports for thefts from vehicles which occurred early Monday morning.

Police say that a total of five firearms were stolen from four different vehicles including the duty weapons of the Madison police officer.

Detectives continue to work leads to identify suspects and recover the stolen property.
