MADISON COUNTY, Ala. – Madison County has republished their COVID-19 Dashboard, detailing the number of students and staff who have tested positive for COVID.

The most recent numbers, as of 4 p.m. Wednesday, show 503 students and staff members have tested positive for COVID-19 out of the 19,672 students currently enrolled in the school system. About two and a half percent of the school system.

Less than a week ago, a spokesman for Madison County Schools said total cases amounted to less than one percent of the 20,000 students in the district but did not give a specific number of cases. The 503 cases on the district’s dashboard Wednesday indicated that the number of cases had more than doubled since last week.

199 students in staff from the Sparkman Family of schools have tested positive for coronavirus out of their 7,583 students.

The Buckhorn Family of schools shows 135 positive cases out of the 4,209 student population.

The Dashboard can be found under the Ready, Set, Forward tab of the Madison County website.

Huntsville City Schools told News 19 it plans to resume a COVID-19 dashboard and is in the process of developing it.

School districts are not required to report case numbers on their own dashboards but instead report data directly to the Alabama Department of Public Health.

“Last year when we look at pediatrics cases at this time, we had to be exact 1,356 cases. This year in the same time frame we have 6,181 cases. That’s a lot of cases in children,” says Dr. Karen Landers with ADPH.

Dr. Karen Landers says parents should make sure their children keep their guards up against the Delta variant.

“We have at least, at this moment, 40 plus kids hospitalized in the state of Alabama, at least nine kids on respiratory support,” said Landers at Wednesday’s Huntsville Area COVID-19 briefing.

Alabama’s COVID-19 Schools K-12 Dashboard does not have current data. The state dashboard was last updated on May 28.

“The Alabama State Department of Education and the Alabama Department of Public Health are currently working to establish a dashboard similar to what we had last year, albeit a modified version. We are working to get that set up and working; however, it is just not ready yet. We have set a date to have that dashboard up and working the week of Labor Day. The expected first report to the public will be September 10,2021. We ask for patience as we work diligently to get this up and running,” says Director of Communications at Alabama Department of Education, Michael Sibley.
