MADISON COUNTY, Ala. – Firefighters responded to a house fire off Maysville Road Wednesday afternoon.

The fire was called in around 3 p.m. to a house on Steakly Road. Fire officials say the back of the house is badly damaged.

The road was shut down between Tanner Point Drive and Maysville Road while firefighters were on the scene.

The family of those who live in the home said there were only two dogs at home at the time of the fire, and they got out unharmed.

Moores Mill firefighters said they had to run hundreds of feet of fire hose to get water to the fire. Many people drove over the lines, which firefighters said is illegal and delays water from getting to the fire.

Firefighters said the back of the home was destroyed. The fire started in the garage, they said, but they were still determining the cause.

The American Red Cross was on the scene to help the family and assist firefighters.
