HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) – Perhaps 2016 is the year your family will sit down and make a budget. If each of us could squeeze in a few extra pennies per month by rounding our utilities bill to the nearest dollar, we could collectively make a big impact.

The Leadership Huntsville/Madison County Connect Class and Huntsville Utilities are working to generate awareness of the “Sign Up to Round Up” program. Through this effort, Huntsville Utilities subscribers can pay just a few extra cents per month while helping school systems in Madison County.

“It provides Huntsville Utilities subscribers the opportunity to round up their utility bill to the nearest dollar and all of the money raised goes directly to support schools in Huntsville City, Madison City and Madison County.”Leadership Huntsville/Madison County Connect Class’s Kim Ogle said.

Due to lack of awareness, only two percent of the 180,000 Huntsville Utilities subscribers participate in the program. Huntsville Utilities’ Joe Gehrdes said participation does not make your bill much higher.

“It’s pocket change, at the very most it could be 99 cents,” Gehrdes said. “Theoretically, you’d be contributing, at the most, around 12 dollars a year to the Schools Foundation.”

To sign up, just go online to the Huntsville Utilities website and follow the prompts. You can also call Huntsville Utilities at (256)535-1200. Finally, you can pick up a paper form and turn it back in to Huntsville Utilities located at 112 Spragins Avenue Northwest in Downtown Huntsville.
