Huntsville area leaders hold COVID-19 briefing

HUNTSVILLE, AL – The Huntsville COVID-19 team held a community briefing in the First Floor Chambers of Huntsville City Hall.

Emergency Management Agency Director Jeff Birdwell joined local health care leaders to provide an update on vaccination rates and positive COVID-19 cases. Officials discussed the delta variant and the impact of the virus on children.

According to Alabama Department of Public Health data, there have been 40,190 positive cases in Madison County with 539 deaths.

Currently, Huntsville Hospital has a 20% positivity rate.

Huntsville Hospital President and COO, Tracy Doughty said 85% of COVID-19 patients in Huntsville are unvaccinated. Out of the 36 people currently in their ICU, 24 patients need ventilator support.

Doughty confirmed there have been three COVID-19 related deaths at Huntsville Hospital in the past 24-hours, all were unvaccinated.

Huntsville Hospital will begin administering a 3rd COVID-19 vaccine shot to immunocompromised people on Monday, August 23. Doughty believes a booster vaccine will become available to the general public by late September.
