Lions split double-header at West Georgia

CARROLLTON, Ga. — Josh Cyr drove in four runs and scored another to lead the University of North Alabama baseball team to a 7-2 win in the nightcap of a Gulf South Conference road double-header against West Georgia. UNA lost the opening game 5-2.

 With the split, the No. 5 ranked Lions are 20-7 overall and 5-3 in GSC play. West Georgia is 14-8 and 6-2.

 UNA took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning of the opener on a two-run single by Cyr but then gave up four runs in the bottom of the inning on just one hit and never recovered. Drew Parker reached on an error to start the UNA rally and later tried to score on a single by Michael Schmidt but was thrown out at the plate. Josh Doyle singled and Jake Sloan walked before Cyr singled to give UNA a 2-0 lead.

 In the bottom of the fourth, the Wolves had just one hit but used two walks, a hit batter, two errors, a wild pitch and a passed ball to take a 4-2 lead. West Georgia added an insurance run in the sixth to make the final count 5-2.

 UNA out-hit West Georgia seven to five but left 12 runners on base.

 Senior Johnny Hornbuckle pitched a complete game for UNA but dropped to 4-2 with the loss. He allowed just five hits in eight innings, walking four and striking out three.

 In the nightcap, UNA scored a run in the second inning, three in the third, two in the fourth and one in the sixth for the win.

 UNA starter Michael Watkins had the game well in hand with a 7-0 lead in the bottom of the seventh with two outs and no one on base but could not finish the game. He walked one batter and gave up four hits as West Georgia closed the gap to 7-2. Brantley Claunch came on to get a fly out to end the threat and get his second save of the season. Watkins is now 5-0 with the win.

 In the second inning J.P. LaMunyon singled, Andrew Almon followed witha  double and Parker drove in the game’s first run with a sacrifice fly. In the third Schmidt had a leadoff home run. Josh Doyle then singled and scored on a double by Cyr. Cyr later scored on a sac fly by Almon to make it 4-0.

 UNA got two more runs in the fourth as Doyle singled, Jake Sloan walked and both scored on another Cyr double.

 The final UNA scored in the sixth when Darrmal Moore singled and scored on a Cyr sacrifice fly.

 The Lions and Wolves will play the final game of the series Sunday at noon.
