HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Huntsville is the leading city in North Alabama, so the person in the Mayor’s seat is especially important.  This week Incumbent Mayor Tommy Battle stopped WHNT News 19 to give his perspective about why he should be re-elected.

Bringing new jobs into the city is one of the mayor’s most important jobs.  Mayor Tommy Battle says that recruitment takes up “about 50-percent of my time, and if it’s not industry recruitment, it’s adding up foundation blocks so that we can recruit industry.  You know, we’re very fortunate in the city of Huntsville.  50-years ago if somebody decided to put in Research Park and its grown today to be the second largest Research Park in America.  Those are the kind of things that we want to put in place now.  Things that will turn into jobs, and turn into prosperity, five ten, fifteen years from now.  Maybe 50-years from now.  People will look back and think ‘wow! What a forward-looking group that put those pieces in place.’ Google fiber is one, the bio-tech campus is another, redoing research park is another.”

All those things that we work on a day-to-day basis give you the foundation, the building blocks to be able to recruit industry and bring people in.” says Mayor Battle.  “A lot of people will talk about growth, and I don’t want exponential growth.  With exponential growth you’ll outgrow your infrastructure and you’ll become like Memphis and like Nashville and places like that.  I don’t want to do that.  I want us to have measured growth, smart growth.  Everybody likes smart things.  We want to have incremental growth so that as we grow, we can build our infrastructure as we grow to fit our community.  As we do that, we’ll have the same quality tomorrow that we have today.”
