HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) – A young girl died and seven other people were transported to the hospital after a severe accident at the intersection of Bailey Cove and Weatherly Road in south Huntsville Tuesday evening.

The crash actually had two separate scenes.  Police say the driver of a black Ford F-150, Gunner Scarano, 18, was traveling at a high rate of speed on Bailey Cove Road.  He allegedly hit three vehicles and a motorcycle near the intersection of Mountain Gap Road and continued on.  No one was seriously injured at that site.

Police say Scarano continued north on Bailey Cove, hitting five vehicles at the intersection of Weatherly Road.  Eight people were hurt in this crash with a wide range of injuries.  HEMSI paramedics and Huntsville Police confirm a 10-year-old girl died at the scene.

Friends identify the girl as Jaden Coppens.  Her older sister, Jasmine, and mother, Andrea, are being treated at Huntsville Hospital.  The family lives in Owens Cross Roads.

Police collected blood samples from Scarano and say test results are pending.  They say this is protocol in all traffic accidents, and the investigation is ongoing in connection with the District Attorney’s office.

Scarano had serious injuries, including burns to the lower half of his body, and is being treated at UAB Hospital.  He also lives in Owens Cross Roads and is a recent graduate of Huntsville High School.  WHNT News 19 spoke with Scarano’s mother Wednesday morning.  She says her son is in tremendous pain, and is unable to talk.

Police said these people were hurt at the intersection of Bailey Cove and Weatherly:

  • Andrea Coppens, 44, of Owens Cross Roads (was driving a Toyota van)
  • Amy Creech, 37, of Owens Cross Roads (she also had a juvenile passenger in her blue Kia)
  • Bruce Shoultes, 65, of Huntsville (was driving a silver Lincoln)
  • Tyler Joseph Smith, 16, of Huntsville (was driving a Toyota Tacoma truck)
  • Daniel Joe Cottingham, 44, of Huntsville (was driving a Honda Odyssey minivan)

A fund has been established to help the Coppens family with medical and burial costs.  Donations can be made at Redstone Federal Credit Union under the name “The Coppens Family Donation Fund.”
