HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) – Lasse Uusivirta, 23, is currently being held in the Madison County Jail with the charge of Rape in the First Degree.

UAHuntsville Police made this arrest on Monday.  Uusivirta is being held on a $10,000 bond.

A female student reported an alleged sexual assault by a male student while in his room on January 13. The incident was investigated. The complainant initially declined to pursue criminal prosecution and told campus police she wanted the case referred to the student conduct board.

Campus police crime log records from April 1 indicate an update to the case stating the alleged victim chose to pursue criminal charges against Lasse Uusivirta and he was then arrested.

The university confirms Uusivirta is a member of the school’s hockey team. Lasse Uusivirta is listed on the UAH athletic website with a hometown of Espoo, Finland. He is a junior at UAH.

“Information about an incident on campus came to the attention of university officials, and facts of the incident were immediately submitted to the university’s disciplinary process,” said Ray Garner, spokesperson for UAHuntsville. “As a result of those procedures, punishment was administered to the student in accordance with established university policies  and procedures.”

Chapter 7.3 of the UAH Student Handbook outlines the procedures for the conduct of disciplinary proceedings at the university:

(e) Formal Disposition by Hearing: When a charged student denies responsibility and the case has not been previously dismissed, a hearing shall be scheduled no less than three days after the date of the Initial Review.

  1. A Formal Hearing is defined as any hearing before the Student Conduct Board or a University Hearing Officer. In cases of sexual violence, the Formal Hearing will be heard by the Student Conduct Board.
  2. The student may choose to have his/her hearing before the Student Conduct Board or a University Hearing Officer, except in cases of sexual violence which will proceed to a Student Conduct Board.
  3. If the student does not choose an option, the hearing shall be heard by a Hearing Officer.

Ray Garner said the University would not comment further on Uusivirta’s arrest. Calls to Charger hockey head coach Kurt Kleinendorst were unreturned so there is no indication yet what Uusivirta’s arrest will mean for his status on the hockey team.
