MADISON COUNTY, Ala. - Tuesday morning, the Madison County Sheriff's Office released the names of two people involved in a double shooting that happened Wednesday in the northern part of the county.
Investigators say a man tried to kill his girlfriend, but she survived, and he then killed himself. The incident happened about 2:30 p.m. at a residence on Moores Mill Road near Eakins Road.
Sheriff Blake Dorning said Ignasio Gomez, 40, shot Claudia Gardena Franco, 30, causing severe injury. Gomez then turned the gun on himself, taking his own life.
Ms. Franco was rushed to Huntsville Hospital by ambulance, where she is listed in critical condition.
A teenager in the home called 911 to report the shootings.
The couple has four children. The Sheriff's Office is working with DHR on living arrangements for the children until relatives arrive to take custody.
John Southerland of Madison County Schools confirmed that after the shooting, Lynn Fanning Elementary and Moores Mill Intermediate went into precautionary lockdown for a short time.
