HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) – Star Market announced Wednesday it will close its location on Bailey Cove Road at the end of the week. The store will close Friday, October 3.
The pharmacy will remain open during normal business hours, as well as the License Department satellite location.
The Bailey Cove location has trimmed down aisles and products available for months, as employees fielded questions from customers about future plans for the store. Employees said they were not notified until Wednesday morning of the decision to close.
WHNT News 19 called Star Market’s administrative office for further information on Wednesday. No one picked up the phone. However, Star Market had a post on its Facebook page about the Bailey Cove location’s closure.
The announcement came in the midst of a legal battle between the store management and property owners. Property owners say Star Market sent a lease renewal notice to the wrong address last year, and the lease expired, as a matter of law.
Star filed a lawsuit last June seeking to block eviction and have its lease termed valid by the court.
Attorneys for Star Market allege brothers John and James Hays, who own the property, were motivated by a desire to sell the property to Walmart.
