HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) - At the meetings of the Sons of the American Revolution, they like to ask trivia questions about heroes of our past, but at this meeting they took time to honor more modern heroes, presenting awards to first responders from several different branches.

Those honored included Huntsville Police Officer Shane Killingsworth, Huntsville Fire and Rescue Service Division Chief Steve Britton, and Madison County Sheriff's Deputy Brent Beavers.

Their families joined to them to accept the honors, and they were all welcomed by the crowd.

The Sons of the American Revolution take pride in getting the chance to recognize modern heroes, too.

"These first responders perform an integral and valuable service in our community, and they put their lives on the line every day for us," said Chapter President George Royer.  "We were pleased and honored to be able to honor them today."

These men might not be the answer to the trivia questions of tomorrow, but their contributions won't go unrecognized.

The Sons of the American Revolution also took time to remember the sacrifices of America's soldiers, dating all the way back to the American Revolution.  Leaders encouraged members to take those sacrifices to heart, remember them during the holidays, and to do something nice for someone in need.
