REDSTONE ARSENAL, Ala. (WHNT) - With just three days left until a possible government shutdown, the Redstone Arsenal leadership is preparing to implement an orderly shutdown of operations, should Congress fail to reach an agreement that avoids the shutdown.

In a press release, leaders at the Arsenal were quick to point out that there is still time for Congress to prevent a lapse in appropriations, and a continuing resolution could be agreed upon that will prevent a shutdown.  However, they went on to say that a shutdown would force a furlough of many of Redstone Arsenal's civilian employees.

If the government shutdown occurs, all members of the Redstone Arsenal workforce could be affected in different ways because employees are paid from different appropriated and non-appropriated funds and contracts, according to the press release.

The guidance issued by the Arsenal to employees is to remain in close contact with supervisors to stay up to date on the evolving situation.  Whether the shutdown happens or not, military personnel would be directed to continue in a normal duty status.

Redstone Arsenal emergency services will continue to operate as usual, even in the case of a shutdown, according to the press release issued by the Arsenal.

Since such a large amount of Arsenal workers will operate as usual in the case of a shutdown, all gates are expected to continue to operate as normal.

Major Exchange activities will be open during normal operating hours and Family, Morale, Welfare and Recreation activities will continue unaffected. Commissary hours will be restricted and will be posted soon.

"We all hope that Congress can avert a shutdown. Unfortunately, we have been through some trying times recently," said Col. Bill Marks, Garrison Commander. "Ours is a team of great professionals though, and we all serve with pride."
