HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) – A Huntsville Hospital nurse is recovering after police say she was stabbed in the head by a female patient.

It happened around 2:30 a.m. Friday.

Huntsville police say 29-year-old Samantha Stasica was helping the patient remove an  IV when the patient became combative.  Officers say the woman pulled out a pocket knife and stabbed Stasica in the side of her head.

She was treated at the emergency room and is home recovering.  The patient is expected to be charged after she is discharged from the hospital.

“Our greatest concern is always for the safety of our staff and of those who come to us for care,” Burr Ingram, Vice President of Communications and Marketing said in a statement. “It is shocking to think that a nurse who is committed to caring for the sick and injured would be a victim of violence from her patient. We know that we cannot eliminate all risk in our work, but we will review this incident thoroughly to determine any further steps we can take.”
