HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - Huntsville police are investigating a shooting Monday evening in the northern part of the city.

Police say they were called to Scottdale Place, located off Pulaski Pike north of Stringfield Road, around 5:30 p.m. but say the shooting happened on Valleydale Road.

The lieutenant at the scene said one person was taken to the hospital with a gunshot to the leg.

Police say there were two cars involved in the shooting--- a driver and passenger in each--- and the victim was a passenger of one of the vehicles.

Police say the person shot ran to a residence on Scottdale Place to get away from the shooter. Police say a child living in the home let the person shot into the home and then the parents called 911.

“Evidently it was a little traumatic, but obviously the person was injured, so naturally it’s human instinct you want to help somebody," said Lt. Johnson with the Huntsville Police Department.

Residents of that home were not injured and authorities say they did not know the person shot.

Lt. Johnson said that once the victim received medical attention they were not interested in helping police with the investigation.

“They didn’t want to press charge and really don’t want us investigating," he said. “All we know right now is it is related to drugs.”

Police collected shell casings from the scene of the shooting which they'll try to trace back to a weapon and hopefully to the shooter.

Lt. Johnson said police know the victim is not from the Huntsville area, and they are asking for the public's help in identifying a suspect.

"We have very little information, so we do ask anyone that lives in that area, you can call us anonymously or you can drop us a tip at Crime Stoppers, please let us know," he said.
