HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — Some residents in  west Huntsville are not happy with the possibility that a main street to enter their neighborhood will be permanently closed off to make way for a new city park.

The proposed park design for the area off Cedar Street behind Merrimack Hall calls for two city owned lots on either side of Cedar to be joined by removing the street between them.

But that same road is a busy street many residents say can’t be closed because it would make getting in and out of their neighborhoods a challenge.

“I think the park would be great, but they can not close this road, it will trap us in here,” resident Nick Tucker says.

Huntsville City Administrator John Hamilton says the city will meet with neighbors and show them several different plans for the park. Some of those plans include closing the road, and some of them do not.

“We are hearing from people both for and against the closure, but whatever we choose to do, we will need to make sure that area still has enough access roads,” Hamilton added.

There will be a meeting about the park with neighborhood association groups January 5th.
