HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — Authorities say a wreck Saturday near the U.S. Space and Rocket Center was the result of a police chase.

Don Webster with Huntsville Emergency Medical Services Inc. (HEMSI) said that one man was transported to the hospital after a single vehicle struck a light pole at Old Madison Pike and Bob Wallace Avenue.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) is now saying that wreck was the result of a police chase that began in Limestone County.

ALEA said that at around 12:28 p.m., Saturday state troopers attempted to stop a 1998 Nissan Maxima driven by Jovon D, Humphreys, 42, of Decatur for speeding on Interstate 565.

ALEA said Humphreys failed to stop and fled troopers pursuing him. A chase ensued through Limestone and into Madison County, according to authorities.

The agency said while on I-565, Humphrey’s vehicle left the roadway and hit a light pole at exit 15 near Old Madison Pike, Bob Wallace Avenue and Sparkman Drive.

The agency said Humphrey was not using a seatbelt at the time of the crash. ALEA also said charges against Humphrey are pending at this time

Webster said that Humphrey is in stable condition at this time.
