HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – One person is dead after a two-car wreck on Pulaski Pike near Routt Road, according to Huntsville Police.

Gene Edward Harmon, 71, was killed and four others were injured in the wreck, which occurred just after 2:15 p.m.

The driver of a GMC Yukon told police the car in front of him hit the brakes as he was driving north and he followed suit, but drifted into the southbound lanes of the road. Both the driver of the Yukon and the driver of a Dodge Caravan attempted to swerve to the west side of Pulaski Pike to avoid a wreck, hitting each other head-on.

Huntsville Police said Harmon wasn’t wearing a seatbelt and was pronounced dead at the scene.

HEMSI and Huntsville Fire & Rescue also responded to the wreck.

All lanes of traffic were closed Saturday afternoon as the scene was cleared, but both roads were reopened later in the day.

Huntsville Police said charges in the wreck are unknown, pending a toxicology report.
