HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — Huntsville Police are looking for the man who attempted to rob a customer coming out of Bumper Billiards at the Gallery Shopping Plaza on University Drive.

It happened just after 1:00 a.m. Wednesday.

Madison Police tell WHNT News 19 the victim in the attempted robbery was an off-duty police officer on their force.

Captain John Stringer identified the officer as patrolman Eric Parker.  He said Parker has been with the department for the past 18 months, and during that time he won 2 meritorious awards for his work.

Captain JesHenry Malone of the Huntsville Police Department said Parker told investigators that a black male suspect wearing a black hoodie and black pants man, approached him. He pointed a semi-automatic gun at the off-duty officer and demanded money.

Instead of his wallet, Parker pulled out his own gun and fired twice in the direction of the would-be robber.  It’s not known if one of the bullets struck the man.

The off-duty officer told Huntsville Police that the man jumped back into his black SUV.  We’re told another person was driving the vehicle.  The pair drove off down University Drive.  The off-duty officer was not hurt.

Hospitals have been notified to contact Huntsville Police if a person shows up with a gunshot wound.  So far, police have not received word of a patient who may have been involved in this incident.

Police are searching for the SUV and its driver. No arrests have been made.
