HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Huntsville Fire & Rescue evacuated the main museum of the U.S. Space & Rocket Center due to a fire Wednesday night.

The center opened as normal at 9 a.m. Thursday morning. Crews worked overnight at the museum to make sure nothing was damaged by the smoke.

U.S. Space & Rocket Center spokesperson Tim Hall says the main museum is where the cafeteria and some Space Camp activities are held. He said there were 34 trainees on the premises, but none should have been in that part of the building at the time the alarm was tripped.

Officials said it appears the fire happened in the administrative area, which is located next to the outdoor space shuttle display. They say the fire started in a work area.

Right now, museum officials have a company inside working on cleaning and restoring the area impacted by the smoke and fire.

No one was hurt. There’s no word yet on what caused the fire.
