MADISON, Ala. (WHNT) – With every holiday season you have shopping, decorating, and family time to look forward to.  There is also the inevitable rise of crime this time of year.  Criminals enjoy the holiday season with a rash of car break-in’s, home burglaries and package thefts.  If you leave your car unlocked, or your packages unattended, watch out!

And just like in Home Alone, criminals are watching for you to leave your home empty.

This year the City of Madison is stepping up to help keep your belonging’s safe while you are away for the holidays.

Madison Police Department is encouraging residents to let them know if you’ll be out-of-town over the holidays, so that they can help keep an eye on your home.

“During the times they’re gone, whenever our officers are available, we’ll have an officer ride by their house, take a look at the house, make sure there’s no suspicious activity going on in the yard or driveway, no doors standing open, that kind of thing.” explains Capt. Terrell Cook of the Madison Police Department.

There are a lot of things you can do to help keep your home safe while you’re gone.  Start by letting your neighbors know that you’ll be away.  Leave outside lights on and consider a timer that will turn one or two interior lights on and off at various times of the night.  Leave a car in the driveway.  The idea is to make it look like someone is there.
